Biography

As a baby Gilles was already parked on stage during concerts of the Dutch folkgroup Crackerhash. There was no escaping it: music was going to be made. At the age of 8 years he picked up the fiddle. Irish traditional music has been his favourite from early on, so ten years later he left for Ireland to pick up the music where it came from. He lived there for a year, taught the fiddle at University College Dublin's Traditional Music Society, and since then travelled back and forth many times. Back in Holland he played with the English guitar player/singer John Waller, he featured as a guest musician on Crackerhash' CD 'Volmaakt'.

He picked up the guitar, started singing and writing songs. Under the name of 'Bigger 'n a Bungalow' he came third in the singer-songwriterfestival in Nijmegen. He played with the Foo Foo Band, with which he recorded their nameless debut album.

As a white-water kayaking guide in Europe and travelling through South America he was away from Holland for a while, but could be found with a fiddle around French campfires, on Patagonian boats and in Peruvian bars.
Travelling widens the horizon, which expanded Gilles' repertoire from the swing and melancholy of Irish music to music from Israel to Venezuela and from gipsy-jazz to his own compositions - played with passion, precision and a lot of fun!

Back in Holland Gilles took to playing music full-time (see groups). He's also much in demand as a teacher for fiddle lessons and workshops. In 2002 his solo-CD 'my eyes' was released, in 2006 Tjane released 'Mark', in November 2007 'janos & gilles' was released, some samples of which can be found in the webshop, in January 2008 Maalstroom released 'open window'.
